Something old, something new.

Thought I’d try to spotlight a few designs and see if anything came out of it.

More new stuff.

As if I didn’t have enough going on with CafePress, Squidoo, Facebook and Twitter

Soon, I’m sure I’ll learn why I need all these.

More likely, I’ll neglect them like Myspace and YouTube.

Okay, enough fooling around.

I’m uploading new designs to CafePress because that seems to be *THE* dependable ROI for my time.

As soon as I’m done playing some random Facebook app …

  • Single Life: Dating, the flirt, bad break-ups …
  • Anti-Love: Scorned by love, lonely hearts, obsessive love

Each category offers the top picks $250, $100 or $50. Read full contest details here.

I didn’t vote for him.

Politics.

Ugh.

[The short-awaited sequel to Politics and religion.]

No matter which side we’re on, every election year we just can’t wait for the political commercials to cease their attacks on us. For the blight of endless lawn signs to disappear.

But what I noticed more of this year than ever before, were the attacks being flung between supporters of opposing candidates.

I consider myself an independent. I have strongly held personal viewpoints that clash with the rigid party lines that classify people as liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat or otherwise. That said, I haven’t found a third party that suits me, so I have to decide which issues are the most absolutely critical to me and my family and vote accordingly.

This tends to lead me to vote Republican, although grudgingly.

And due to the huge number of liberal influences in my life—friends, family and colleagues—it made talking about the then-upcoming election even more unpleasant in the months leading to November 4.

Not because I’m opinionated—people expect that from me—but because in spite of my tendencies I am actually a conflict avoider, and I’d had about enough of the us vs. them mentality over a year ago.

The most memorable exchange involved me receiving a simple two word response, racist pig, in reply to a Twitter comment I’d left regarding my selection of presidential candidate.

[Had the race pitted Senator Clinton against McCain, would that person have called me a sexist jackass? Just curious. Probably not, since I'm a white woman.]

Regardless, based on the issues and the facts I’d decided I wouldn’t vote for Obama or Clinton long ago, and if McCain had been black, it wouldn’t have caused me the slightest hesitation.

“I didn’t vote for him,
but he’s my president,
and I hope he does a good job.”
— John Wayne

I’m not excited about the next four years. I worry that even a few of the many concerns I had about an Obama presidency will come to pass. While I wouldn’t consider myself a radical, compared to mainstream America soccer moms I might qualify as one.

Obama Inauguration Own a Piece of History!

On the whole, with few exceptions, I am against making new laws that take away people’s rights. Should they pass a law that makes it illegal to eat horse meat? No. Doesn’t mean I want to start, but I wouldn’t take that right away from a neighbor whose actions aren’t hurting anyone else.

One of the gray areas: smoking. Yes, you should have the right to smoke. But I should also have the right to move about in public without breathing in concentrated known carcinogens, right? Touchy subject. I should open up a debate on it sometime.

On the whole, I am against making new laws that are aimed at protecting us from ourselves. For instance, helmet laws. When concerning adults, let those who ride decide. When concerning minors, we’re back in that gray area. Parents have rights, but in the case of chronically stupid parents, you gotta look out for kids as well. Another good debate topic. But not today.

Today, I’m here for ideas.

I’m looking for advice on an Obama inauguration T-shirt design that includes “I didn’t vote for him” without being negative, bitter, racist, threatening, etc. In fact, I think it should be humorous. But I’m not sure where to go graphics-wise.

Some designs currently on CafePress:

There are plenty of anti-Obama designs as well, from clever to quite rude. But with CafePress making a big push to promote the inauguration for shopkeepers’ benefit, I thought it would be good to have a presence there.

Please comment.

DOZENS of new Twilight themed designs at my latest CafePress shop just born 1/1/09 … New Moons!

Watch for red flags ahead.

Discovered today that CafePress is red-flagging text designs that simply say “New Moon” or “New Moon 2009″ … which sucks for those of us hoping to get a foot in the door should the highly anticipated Twilight sequel come with the same generous deal that Summit surprised CP shopkeepers with: Go ahead, make Twilight movie fan gear. We’re cool with that. (Summit, you rock.)

She just keeps saying, "He's gone."

The design at right is perfectly acceptable, however, apparently.

As well as thousands of other images tagged with “New Moon movie” at CafePress. (Over 3,600 as of today.)

Which rocks exponentially, because I’ve got about 40 new designs related to the Twilight sequel New Moon going up in cafepress.com/newmoons soon!

So…

What did you think of the book?

What do you expect to be different in the movie?

Online income in 8 minutes.

You can open a Basic Shop on CafePress in about 8 minutes.

If your idea is good, people will buy merch with your design on it!

Here’s a step-by-step for your first Basic Shop.

First, sign up for CafePress. (If you want to use me as your referrer, my ID is freelief.)

Next, you’ll upload your art (2000 pixels high and/or wide fits most items) and give it some tags that will help customers find it. If you don’t tag it, it won’t show up in the Marketplace search, so don’t skip that step!

Then, click on Open a New Shop.

We’ll look at Premium Shops later. For now, click on FREE Basic Shop.

Simple enough. Choose your URL, name your shop, and if desired send your customers back to your Web site when they have completed their order.

You might be tempted to click on Add Products right away, but DON’T!! First, go to Storefront Info. This will save you a lot of time, and make choosing the right products for your shop easier.

By filling in the default settings, you will be able to see what this design looks like on different merch and won’t have to go back and set pricing or add descriptions later.

Now you’re ready to choose products. The easiest way to go about this, is to click the Make Selections link under All Products (next to the New Products box near the top left of this page) and preview items in the pop-up window that will open.

Your design may not appear to fit on some items, but you can fix that soon. First, click to choose the items you want to sell in your store. It is not necessary to add every item, but you’ll want to give your customers plenty of choices. Don’t choose certain products if your design looks really bad on them.

Once you have selected the items you want, click the Add Selections button and the pop-up window will disappear. Scroll down to the bottom of the main page to add the products.

You’re getting close! Time to fix those items that need the design resized on them to be appealing. Click on the first item you want to change to enter the Product Designer.

From here, you can use the drop down menu under Select Image Height to get your design to look right.

Repeat with other items that need to be amended. Also on this page, you can change the name, description or price markup on all or on just selected items, or remove any items with the Bulk Change tool near the top.

You clicked done, and you are! You’re ready to start making money with CafePress. Share the URL of your store with your friends. I’ve found that regardless of my self-promotion or lack of it, the well-known CafePress and excellent Google search rankings do most of my marketing for me.

Here’s what your new store looks like. Since it is a Basic Shop, there are limitations in the amount of customizing you can do. However, you can open an unlimited number of free Basic Shops and good designs will still compete in the Marketplace.

These are real check amounts from the OOPTEE account, the store that is run by three young entrepreneurs who do virtually NO advertising and have mostly simple text art.

If you decide to get serious with CafePress, you’ll definitely see the advantage of having a Premium Shop. I will discuss some of the perks in another post.

Have fun!

The Donot Fairy

This is not a bad thing.

Not bad at all.

CafePress shopkeepers call this being visited by the Donot Fairy.

I say she’s welcome to visit as often as she likes!

Pirates > vampires, too.

Everyone knows that pirates > ninjas.

But who would win in a battle of hearts, Edward Cullen or Depp’s Jack?

If sales are any indication, I’m betting on the swashbuckler.

(Sold another “heart belongs to Captain Sparrow” shirt today.)

I love that people love these!
